Instagram Explores Generative AI Features for Enhanced User Experience
- 31 Jul 2023
Instagram, under its parent company Meta, is steadily advancing its development in generative artificial intelligence (AI). This shift follows the announcement by Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's CEO, on the company's commitment to incorporate generative AI into all its products. Instagram is already testing several creative AI tools, which are set to revolutionize user interactions on the platform.
One of these features is the generative AI sticker creation tool, initially tested in May. This tool allows users to create personalized graphics for their Instagram posts and stories using text prompts, thereby enabling in-stream visual AI creation. Instagram is also introducing two visual editing tools that leverage AI. The first is 'AI brush', which allows users to swap parts of their images with AI-designed alternatives. The second tool, 'Restyle', enables users to modify parts of an uploaded image using text prompts. For instance, users can change the background of their images by describing their preferred setting.
In addition to these visual tools, Instagram is also experimenting with an AI chatbot. Drawing inspiration from Snapchat’s My AI chatbot tool, Instagram's version will be integrated into the Direct Messages (DMs) section. Users can summon the tool by typing @ai into the chat box to ask questions or make requests. This feature can be used to inquire about recommendations for dining places, movie listings, and even for settling trivia disputes.
Another intriguing tool is the AI-powered ‘Message Summary’ that condenses lengthy DMs. With the increasing transition of interactions to DMs on Instagram, this tool could prove useful in saving time, although its ability to fully comprehend the context of every message is yet to be determined.
Transparency is a significant concern with the growing use of generative AI. To address this, Instagram plans to label AI-generated content. This feature will highlight images created using Meta’s generative AI tools. Furthermore, Meta encourages creators to tag their posts with a 'created by AI' marker if they use other AI tools. Despite the potential misuse of these tags, they serve as crucial indicators for maintaining transparency.
The current generative AI tools proposed by Instagram may appear underwhelming, with many producing visuals that seem slightly out of place. However, we are still in the early stages of exploring the potential of generative AI. The real test of these tools will be their application by artists in creating new, human-centered art forms. As these tools continue to evolve and improve, so will their utilization, making their integration into platforms like Instagram a vital first step.
Instagram has yet to reveal when these new features will be launched. However, users can anticipate a gradual merging of more AI functions into their Instagram feed in the near future.
